One case of measles has been confirmed in the state this year, NJDOH said. The mumps case is related to international travel, NJDOH said.
The state is urging individuals, especially parents, guardians and caregivers, to be aware of the symptoms of these highly contagious viruses and to stay up to date with the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) shots.
Individuals who have not received two MMR shots or are unaware of their history should reach out to their health care provider to check their immunity levels, especially if traveling, NJDOH said.
Symptoms of measles, which appear one to two weeks after exposure include high fever, cough, runny nose, and watery or red eyes. Mumps can start with fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, and loss of appetite. Later, it appears as a swelling of the salivary glands or puffy cheeks and a tender, swollen jaw.
